CATALOGUE TEXT
The revolution devours its own children. Autobiographical examinations of life under communist rule in China and Cambodia. Narratives of existing under extreme conditions, in which the extreme is revealed only in retrospect, in memories. The narrators of this programme embody precisely this phenomenon because essentially they recount only ordinary, everyday things. The terror comes only in retrospect, as it were. A displaced effect.

Antonio Gramsci, an Italian communist who spent the years from 1928 until his death in 1937 in prison and was looking for a synthesis of Marxism and classical humanism throughout his active life, wrote a series of philosophical miniatures, one of which was entitled “A Justification of Autobiography”: “It is certain that autobiography is of great historical value, since it shows life as lived and not as written laws or the moral principles prevailing anyway would have it.”
